The Oscar nominations ceremony held December 5th has thrown up many interesting names; one that was kind of expected to do well was that of Frank Ocean. Even then, six nominations is cool, more so when you get nods in the creamy layer categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artists categories.
But then, if you have a debut like Channel Orange that sold 131,000 copies in its very first week, you too would get a couple of nods for the Grammy awards. There’s no doubt in my mind that Ocean’s success also owes a fair bit to his open letter in which he came forth on his first love – a man. This letter came a week, I think, before the debut of Channel Orange.
