POST NO BILLS; The Artistic Flavors of Harlem Explode in Uniquely Dynamic New Art Show

(Harlem, NY) – From September 13th through October 15th, New York patrons of the arts will be treated to artistic expressions of the human condition that reality TV cannot touch.  That’s when the new show POST NO BILLS is on exhibit at The Poets Den & Gallery, 309 East 108th Street and Second Avenue. Artist George “SEN” Morillo’s work will be displayed during the month long exhibition, which will also feature guest artists such as Marthalicia Matarrita.

An artist of Dominican and Costa Rican heritage who was raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, George “SEN” Morillo, a graffiti legend, first honed his skills in the 1980s during the golden era of the Hip-Hop subculture.  His canvases then, were neighborhood buildings and subway trains.  At 15, George was commissioned by the late, great photographer Richard Avedon to create a live art show and canvas.  A few years later, New York City outlawed the original canvases (subway cars), which gave way to less rebellious backdrops for the art – fabric!  The urban art war veteran currently creates personalized miniature Graffiti subway car replicas, canvases of all sizes and a graffiti-inspired clothing line for Rachel Roy.  The Rachel Roy commission allowed “Sen” to be the first graffiti artist to design the windows of Macy’s famous Herald Square’s 6th Avenue windows.  Hip-Hop’s graffiti subculture comes back to life at The Poets Den & Gallery.

Harlem based Marthalicia Matarrita is a self-described “mother, sister, daughter, artist, entrepreneur and community advocate. Marthalicia also served our country in Iraq as a member of the Army National Guard.   A multi-textured Hip-Hop artist, Marthalicia’s paintings are infused with urban dialog; with emotion, love, hope and challenges to the human spirit that she has known personally.

The Exhibit’s curator, Martin Galindo of Matrix NYC Creative Enterprises is himself an East Harlem resident of Puerto Rican heritage. He has been described as, “An enthusiastic catalyst for cultural exchange in a community, that can only benefit even more from multiple cultural vehicles.”  His collaboration with the artists, and the East Harlem Presents organization has lead up to this unique event. The exibit opens with a reception and post exhibition celebation on Thursday, September 16th at 6:00p.m. for a meet and greet with the artist. For more info visit www.Eastharlempresents.org
