Shyan Selah, BNW & Keith Tucker Tell Hip Hop Youth to Go Green

This past Monday night was all about soul, health, music and education for The Seattle Area Youth Green Dinner at the Mount Baker Community Club in Seattle. The dinner was part of radio host and Hip Hop activist Keith Tucker's "Pursuit of a Green Planet" film documentary project. Shyan Selah and Brave New World, Inc (BNW) have partnered with Tucker on this historic project which merges hip hop ideals with the Going Green movement.

The audience was largely comprised of youth groups from East Madison Gov. GregoireYMCA, El Centro de la Raza and Powerful Schools. Once the kids had a chance to try a healthy first time vegetarian dinner from "the Upper Crust" caterers, they were educated about food and health trends by speakers such as Amanda Strombom, President of Vegetarians of Washington; Ngosi Oleru, Chief of Environmental Health Services for King County Public Health; and Dr. Che Joplin, author of I am Hip Hop, I am Health.

The goal of the "Pursuit of a Green Planet" documentary is to take an inside look at how the food we eat affects our health and tie healthy living back to the origins of Hip Hop. As Hip Hop was a pioneering art form for the urban community looking for a better life in the late 70s, "Pursuit of a Green Planet" brings those ideals full circle by incorporating Hip Hop into the Green Movement.

Shyan Selah at Green DinnerDuring the Green Dinner, the audience was treated to a dance performance by T3AM AV3NG3R$, a "jerk" dance group and  Selah (who happens to be a vegetarian) hosted the event and performed the "Green Label" remix versions of his hit single, "Hollywood Blvd," and "My Musik," from his Brave New World album out last year. Both songs received standing ovations from the audience. Shyan and BNW will assist the "Pursuit of a Green Planet" crew with Green Dinners throughout the U.S. (including Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York) as well as the soundtrack for the film documentary.

More about the film:

The film, "Pursuit of a Green Planet (POAGP)" takes a critical look at the connections between food, culture, economics and the epidemic of lifestyle related disease plaguing America's youth. Keith Tucker is a regular guy who will become a living experiment as he makes the radical transition from your average American diet and lifestyle to a truly green, organic vegan lifestyle. He will be our guide on a journey of discovery as we learn how our food today actually makes us sick, the role corporation's play in determining what we consume, the history of chemicals in our food chain, how our everyday eating habits can become deadly and what we can do to combat these realities.

Keith and company will travel the country on the Greenhound, a bus converted to run off of pure and recycled vegetable oil. On the journey with Keith will be two youth who have severe and immediate health issues related to their diet and lifestyle. These youth are at a crucial crossroads where they have to change their lifestyle or risk a dramatic decrease in their health and quality of life. Our travelers will have to meet some of the biggest personalities in Hip Hop, all of whom are long time vegetarians and vegans. Saul Williams, Justin Bua, Persia White, Stic Man, KRS One and others will meet our travelers and make appearances in the film.
