NYPD Forced to Approve Sound for G.A.ME 6/24, 6/27

June 2009 – After a fierce battle with the NYPD’s 44th Precinct in the Bronx over a sound permit, the Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) has triumphed. On Wednesday June 24th, 2009, the Go Green Hip-Hop Tour will stop at the College Avenue Green Thumb Garden located at College Avenue between E. 170th and E. 171st Streets in the Bronx.

The Go Green Hip-Hop tour is about Hip-Hop’s fight to create sustainable energy solutions, healthy food choices, and accessible quality healthcare. The NYPD definitely illustrated how much of a fight it would be by claiming historical problems may prevent the event from carrying out as planned. Even with local Community Board #4’s support and partnering organizations Golden Krust Bakery, Green Thumb, The Baum Forum, Just Food, Montifiore Health School Program, Healthy Bodega Initiative, Slow Food USA, Hip Hop Association, West Bronx Local Development Corporation, Brooklyn Queens Landtrust and La Familia Verde, attorney Gideon Oliver had to intervene. “I am incredibly relieved that the event will go on and I hope in the future the NYPD will stop discriminating against certain communities,” said Executive Director Omowale Adewale.

The event will feature Hip-Hop artists Red Clay, Bronx Über Villain, Sistah Mia, Sosoon, Senator Eric Carthage from MINDSpray and Tzo. Street Rockers will be break dancing. There will be a healthy cooking exhibition by Annie Moss of Montifiore Health School Program, a food justice workshop by Karen Washington of La Familia Verde, a composting demonstration by Rasheed Hislop of Green Thumb, and herbal gardening by Cecil King.

The tour continues on to Baltimore, MD, Boston MA, and returns to the Bronx on Saturday June 27, 2009. Saturday at E. 167th and Gerard Avenue, there will be performances by NYOIL, Readnex, Ihsan, Ravage, Bronx Über Villain, and several green workshops, including a healthy food presentation by Just Food trainer Tree Williams of Live Sip and an informational on the Healthy Bodega Initiative by Dugeidy Ortiz.

Both Bronx events begin at 12:00pm and end at 4:00pm.
