The Recording Academy and SXSW Present the GRAMMY Garage During Weeklong Music Festival

Music Community Invited To Participate in Various Industry Events Sponsored by The Recording Academy and Its Affiliates March 18 – 21 in Austin, Texas

March 16, 2009, SANTA MONICA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As part of The Recording Academy®'s efforts to support music makers and the creative community, it will collaborate with SXSW to offer performers of the 2009 SXSW Music Festival free secured parking for their vehicles and gear with the GRAMMY® Garage, March 18 – 21. Located in downtown Austin's Waterloo Park, the parking garage is a short walk to various venues such as Stubb's, Emo's and the Austin Convention Center. Additionally, The Recording Academy Pacific Northwest and Texas Chapters, the MusiCares® Foundation, the GRAMMY Foundation®, and the Academy's Advocacy & Government Relations department will sponsor or host various events and programs throughout the weeklong festival.

In its second year, GRAMMY Garage will provide artists officially showcasing at SXSW the opportunity to securely park their vehicles and their gear during the duration of the music festival. Parking spaces will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis. The days and hours of operation of GRAMMY Garage at Waterloo Park are March 18 – 21, 5 p.m. – 3 a.m. Additionally, The Recording Academy will have a membership booth set up in the Artist Village @ Waterloo Park (403 E. 15th St.) from March 18 – 21, 5 – 10 p.m.

Other events sponsored or hosted by The Recording Academy and its affiliates are:

MusiCares Safe Harbor Room (Austin Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez St., Room 13B), will provide artists and crew members struggling with addiction issues a safe haven. Staffed by qualified chemical dependency and intervention specialists, the Safe Harbor Room offers a support network to those in recovery while they are participating in the 2009 SXSW Festival. March 18, 5:45 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.; March 19, 6:15 – 7:15 p.m.; March 20, 5:15 – 6:15 p.m.; and March 21, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The Recording Academy Texas Chapter Annual Membership Celebration (Four Seasons Hotel, 98 San Jacinto Blvd. on the lawn overseeing Lady Bird Lake). The music industry is welcomed to join fellow Recording Academy members and kick off the SXSW music festival with a special performance by GRAMMY-nominated Grupo Fastasma and enjoy complimentary appetizers and beverages. Thursday, March 19, 5 – 8 p.m.

Copyright Royalty Board: What Happens In D.C. Doesn't Stay In D.C. (Austin Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez St., Room #17AB). The Recording Academy's GRAMMYs on the Hill® initiative will host an industry panel to discuss the recent decisions on mechanicals and performance royalty rates that affect every songwriter, artist, publisher and record label in the country. Panelists include Jon Potter (Digital Media Assn.), Jay Rosenthal, (Publishers Assn.), and attorney Ken Froenlick. Panel will be moderated by Recording Academy Vice President of Advocacy & Government Relations Daryl Friedman. Friday, March 20, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

The Industry's Future And The Major Label Lawyer's Role (Austin Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez St., Room #17AB). Sponsored by the GRAMMY Foundation's Entertainment Law Initiative, panelists include Rand Hoffman (Interscope Geffen A&M Records), Lisa Margolis (Warner Bros. Records), and Julie Swidler (Sony Music). Ken Abdo (Lommen, Abdo, Cole, King & Stageberg) will serve as moderator. Friday, March 20, 3 – 4 p.m.

SXSEATTLE PARTY (Palm Door, 401 Sabine) Sponsored in part by The Academy's Pacific Northwest Chapter, a group of Seattle-based organizations join together to highlight the vibrant Seattle music scene and present some of the region's most exciting new artists.
