Rap Music Linked to Sexism

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- That's the conclusion of a North Carolina State University study that examined rap music's effects on sexist attitudes among college students. Many critics claim that rap music causes sexist beliefs, but the study's authors suggest the connection they found between rap and sexism is unlikely to be a direct cause-and-effect.

"It's like hearing the word 'chocolate' and suddenly having a craving for a candy bar," says Dr. Michael Cobb, assistant professor of political science, who conducted the study along with Dr. Bill Boettcher, associate professor of political science.

Cobb and Boettcher's findings -- titled "Ambivalent Sexism and Misogynistic Rap Music: Does Exposure to Eminem Increase Sexism?" -- were recently published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

The study found that college students who were asked to listen to rap music had significantly higher levels of reported sexism. In the study, males who listened to any rap music were more sexist than those in the control group even though sometimes the rap lyrics did not include sexist language. Females in the study also reported higher levels of sexism when rap music was not sexist in its language, but their endorsement of sexist beliefs was the lowest after listening to rap with overtly sexist language.

"Sexism is imbedded in the culture we live in, and hearing rap music can spontaneously activate pre-existing awareness of sexist beliefs," Cobb says. "We feel it's unlikely that hearing lyrics in a song creates attitudes that did not previously exist. Instead, rap music, fairly or unfairly, has become associated with misogyny, and even minimal exposure to it can automatically activate these mental associations and increase their application, at least temporarily."

To measure the association between rap and sexism, students were recruited to take part in a study and were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions. In the control group, students' levels of sexism were measured, but they did not listen to any music. A second condition required students to listen to non-sexist rap music, while a third required them to listen to a rap song with explicitly sexist language. In these two conditions, students' levels of sexism were measured after listening to the music, but they were unaware of the true purpose of the study.

Participants in the group assigned to listen to rap with sexist lyrics heard the song Kill You by Eminem, which describes hostility and violence toward women. The group listening to rap with non-sexist lyrics heard Sabotage by the Beastie Boys, a song that has a similar rhythm to Kill You, but is devoid of overt sexist lyrics.

As expected, males were more sexist across all three conditions. Surprisingly, however, Cobb and Boettcher found that sexist attitudes among respondents also increased after exposure to rap that contained no sexist lyrics.

"Rap music may be associated with sexist attitudes and beliefs, regardless of the actual lyrical content," Cobb says. "So non-sexist rap can now have sexist implications. This gets back to our hypothesis that we don't think rap music causes sexism, because how can rap that contains non-sexist lyrics cause someone to become sexist?"

According to Cobb, "the key to understanding why women rejected sexism only after listening to Eminem is motivated self-awareness. In the absence of explicitly sexist language, the negative associations with rap music are still being primed. In this case, however, the receiver is unaware that this process is taking place and therefore makes no attempt to inhibit their reactions. When women listened to Eminem, however, the blatant misogyny is startling to them and it triggers a more careful interpretation and rejection of the premises in the song. Males, who were not the targets of Eminem's ire in the song, are not as motivated to recognize the mechanisms at work."

The findings that listeners to both kinds of rap music had higher levels of sexist attitudes than those in the control group, particularly males, is a cause for concern, Cobb says, but it is a concern that also calls for more research into understanding the relationship between the origins of music and the expressed attitudes.

"Priming latent sexism is not the same thing as causing it," Cobb says. "At worst, we could conclude that rap music might exacerbate pre-existing tendencies, but so too can other genres of music and varied forms of entertainment. There is not much evidence in our study to support an argument in favor of censorship."

Kollaboration Celebrates 8 Years of "Empowerment Through Entertainment"

LOS ANGELES , CA - February 21, 2008

The 8th Annual Kollaboration talent show will take place Saturday, February 23, 2008 at The Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The theme for this year's talent show is entitled "A Yellow Carpet Event", launching the events debut as an all-inclusive Asian Pacific Islanders (API) show.  Hosted by Comedian PK, the show will give up-and-coming API artists an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of over 2000 audience members.

This year's show is already sold out and will be the biggest Kollaboration event ever. On October 21, 2007 , nearly 100 talented acts auditioned for this year's Kollaboration show. Judges had a difficult time narrowing down the field, but in the end 11 talented acts were chosen to perform and compete in the show. Brooklyn, NY - After their phenomenal success in 2007 organizers of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival are expanding the Festival programming for 2008. The Festival is expanding within Brooklyn as well as nation wide. "Producing a Festival in the community is fundamentally different than going to 100 acres in the desert or Randall's Island," writes Festival Chair Wes Jackson. "Most homeowners are not thrilled to have 20,000 people outside their window and we understand that. We don't want that either. Our mission is to create a powerful yet intimate event that can live within the Planet of Brooklyn. So we decided to go deeper into Brooklyn and spread that energy across the borough. To Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Bed Stuy, Downtown and DUMBO."

In addition, themes that were touched on in 2007 are being given their own space and time in 2008. Last year Brooklyn Bodega partnered with powerHouse Books to help celebrate the anniversary of Wild Style. This year that concept is being rolled into a four week outdoor film series. Screenings will celebrate the legacy of Hip-Hop cinema as well as introduce audiences to some of the fine independent filmmakers in Brooklyn.

The Funk and Soul element of past festivals is also being rolled into a separate day. "We have believed that Hip-Hop is soul, funk, jazz and R&B. Acts from Maya Azucena to El Michels Affair have been crowd favorites since 2005. So we decided to give them their own time to shine," added Jackson.

The main Festival day will still feature the best of old school, new school, and local acts. Although artists announcement are forthcoming organizers are very excited about the legends and young lions they are looking to bring back to Brooklyn.

The most exiting wrinkle to 2008 is the BHF Tour. After the Brooklyn dates the lineup will hit the road spreading love the Brooklyn way. The BHF Tour it set to hit Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Raleigh, D.C., and Philadelphia with more dates to be added. "Brooklyn holds a mythical place in Hip-Hop culture. The Brooklyn energy is what inspires us year in and year out. We want to bring that to fans across the country. With the tour we are viewing ourselves as cultural ambassadors."

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED IN THE PAUL WALL/KING ASHOKA THAT'S IT REMIX CONTEST

Finalists DJ Jonny5, DJ Chynaman, Lil Grippa, DuBols, Nomadic, L-Train, and DJ Maverick were chosen by a team of music industry professionals, but the ultimate winner will be determined by a public vote, held online at http://kingashoka.org/djremix/vote.  Visitors to the site can listen to each of the remixes, as well as download the original version of the song.  Voting for the contest ends March 1st.

All participants were provided with the original song as well as the acappella version with which to create their remix.  Submissions came in all musical formats, ranging from classical, to hip-hop, to house.

Lyrical '08 Online Gospel Talent Competition

The Gospel Musician's American Idol

February 16, 2008: Glorifying the Ministry of Music, CIGS Inc. has developed the gospel musician's version of American Idol (online) called Lyrical. Lyrical is an online gospel talent competition where we provide the lyrics and you compose the music.

For a nominal entry fee of $35, artists will gain access to a set of 10 lyrics that they can compose music to in the following categories: urban contemporary gospel, southern gospel, soul jazz, jubilee, a cappella, holy hip hop and gospel blues. Registration: February 11 - May 31, 2008.

Artists can submit their music via mp3 or any digital format (preferably online for quicker processing) for consideration for our final presentation of musical interpretations. From July 6- August 10, the entire gospel community will vote on the finalists CIGS Inc chooses as the best creative interpretations of each lyric.

Winning artists will receive all star treatment during Lyrical Week (August 25-Sep 1, 2008) where they will take part in a publicized press conference, an awards banquet to celebrate their winnings, a professional photo shoot, professional recording sessions to record their winning entry and a live performance at the Lyrical Concert finale.

Houston MC Devin the Dude is set to release his newest project, Smoke Sessions vol. 1, through BCD Music Group Inc. The mixtape will be the first installment of a series of Smoke Sessions volumes to be released this year by Devin and his longtime collaborators Coughee Brothaz and is scheduled to hit stores on April 1st.

Smoke Sessions vol. 1 is Devin's first release since leaving Rap-A-Lot Records, his label of 14 years, earlier this month and also comes on the heels of his fourth solo album, Waiting to Inhale, released in March of 2007 to critical acclaim. In fact, Devin's been called "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper" since making waves in the underground with a guest appearance on Scarface's My Homies and releasing his first solo album The Dude both in 1998.
