showcase, parties and the debut of "In The Lab"
October 17, 2008
For those who don't know the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival is next week. It is the only conference for new and cutting edge music, film and culture in New York City. Old fogies may remember the New Music Seminar or even the old Vibe Magazine conference (where I first met Cee-Lo and Goodie Mob, btw). Alas, this is all we got these days.
Your friends at Brooklyn Bodega are doing their best to make the most of it. We realize this may be the only time many Bodega members will be in town outside of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.
We have a full week of programming called the BODEGA IS OPEN. The main BODEGA IS OPEN event is Tues Oct 21st at DROM with PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers), Tanya Morgan, Fresh Daily, Homeboy Sandman, Che Grand, Outasight, P. Casso, Housing Authority, and DJ Parler. Hosted by Bodega Head Honcho Wes Jackson. Hopefully you all have seen those flyers.
We have also just added another wrinkle that we are truly excited about. Next week will be the launch of the new idea we have been cooking up called "In The Lab".
Produced in conjunction with our friends at Yume "In The Lab" is a series of intimate studio performances and in depth interviews. For all my NPR heads think WNYC's "Soundcheck" or "The Sound of Young America" but focused on Hip-Hop music and culture.
"In The Lab" will be launching during CMJ this year and hosted by LIU - Brooklyn (Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus). Special thanks to our friends at LIU for the use of their fantastic studio.
Interviews will be conducted by Wes Jackson, founder and president of Brooklyn Bodega and members of LIU's radio station.
Each Day of CMJ a different artist will be featured:
Monday Oct 20th - Homeboy Sandman
Tuesday Oct 21st - Fresh Daily
Wednesday Oct 22nd - Blu
Thursday Oct 23rd - Tanya Morgan
Friday Oct 24th - PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers)
We are really excited about this idea as it gives us a chance to go deeper than most 300-word handy cam interviews. We will be able to sit down with the best and the brightest up and comers as well as old schoolers and truly begin to understand their vision and creative process.
And as we prepare to relaunch brooklynbodega.com as more of an academic and cultural journal as opposed to a YouTube rebroadcast and flyer repository, "In The Lab" is the perfect first shot.
Other Bodega Approved/BODEGA IS OPEN events for next week
Our boy Blu and friends "Coast2Coast" at SOB's on 10/22
Blitz Da Ambassador and 88 Keys at SOB's on 10/23
Also Uncle Ralph will be Alibi on the 23rd as well
Flyers to come
Looking forward to seeing you all next week.
