OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 25, 2008) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will be in Toronto on February 27, 2008, to learn about the largest youth-led urban arts project in the Greater Toronto Area. She will also participate in an event to create public awareness about the abolition of slavery in Canada.

Visit to the Remix Project and discussion with youth
The Governor General will tour the facilities of the Remix Project to discover programs offered to participants. She will then take part in a discussion about the challenges youth face in Toronto, the ways the arts are being used to tackle those challenges, and how the Remix Project is helping youth achieve their life goals. Remix is one of the largest youth-led urban arts programs in Toronto, using hip-hop culture as a bridge to employment, education and mentorship. This visit is part of the Governor General's efforts to highlight the ways in which urban artists are combating violence and empowering youth to improve their communities.

Follow the North Star
The Governor General will be delivering a speech during Follow the North Star, a musical and cultural presentation that will bring together performing artists, educators, historians and politicians from across Canada on the occasion of the 175th Anniversary of the British Imperial Act of 1833 for the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. During her speech, Her Excellency will follow up on a youth dialogue on the abolition of slavery and the elimination of racial discrimination. The forum was held last year at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and in advance of the United Nations International Day for the Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
