DALLAS , February 19, 2008 - Finalists were announced today in the nationwide That's It DJ Remix Contest. The challenge sparked the interest of thousands, but only seven album-ready tracks remain as contenders to become the official remix for "That's It", the newest single from hip-hop artists Paul Wall and King Ashoka.
Six of the seven are from the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex, fitting because both Paul Wall and King Ashoka are native Texans. L-Train, of Raleigh , North Carolina , is the only exception.
Finalists DJ Jonny5, DJ Chynaman, Lil Grippa, DuBols, Nomadic, L-Train, and DJ Maverick were chosen by a team of music industry professionals, but the ultimate winner will be determined by a public vote, held online at http://kingashoka.org/djremix/vote. Visitors to the site can listen to each of the remixes, as well as download the original version of the song. Voting for the contest ends March 1st.
All participants were provided with the original song as well as the acappella version with which to create their remix. Submissions came in all musical formats, ranging from classical, to hip-hop, to house.
"It was cool to listen to the differences in everyone's submissions," said King Ashoka. "It will be interesting to see who the fans pick."
"That's It" is the first single off of Timely Evolution, the sophomore album from King Ashoka. In it, he combines provocative street poetry with hot club tracks to create the most imaginative musical collaboration to come out of the Dallas hip-hop scene yet. His sound, most closely resembling a mix between Scarface, Petey Pablo and Mystikal has also helped to earn him a considerable local following. Ashoka has long been known for his gritty voice and in-your-face performance style and this project does not disappoint. On Timely Evolution Ashoka takes it even further by bringing together some of the most notable talent to come out of Texas, including: Erykah Badu, Gemini, Paul Wall and M Dot.
