(Chicago) Three stages of non-stop eclectic global entertainment come alive for the 18th Annual Chrysler Financial African Festival of the Arts! Under the theme of “Cultural Creativity ”, Chicago’s largest neighborhood festival, celebrates the African influence on global cultures and explores how culture impacts political, economic and social change. The festival features over 100 performances with world renowned talent from Sierra Leone, South Africa, Cuba, New Orleans and Chicago! Learn African dance, quilting and drumming techniques in the special interest pavilions. There are activities for the entire family. The African Festival of the Arts is a composition of a music festival; film and video festival; dance festival; food festival; an art festival; drumming festival; book festival and a big African marketplace. The festival is Labor Day Weekend August 31 - September3 from 10:00am-10:00pm in Chicago’s historic Washington Park (51st and Cottage Grove). Tax deductible admission is $10 in advance, $12 at the gate or $30 4-day weekend special pass. Family and group discounts are available.
Over 250,000 people from around the globe gather in Washington Park to enjoy the art, music, history, fashion and cuisine from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and other African Diaspora destinations during the extended end of summer weekend. More than 300 vendors sell their wares- at great prices- in the virtual African Market place! Shoppers will discover amazing treasures including fine sculpture; beaded furniture; jewelry and gem stones; fashions; health and skin care products; hand woven fabrics and textiles; museum quality fine art and more!. The savvy shopper always negotiates until the price is right.
The simulated African village offers pavilions where attendees can enjoy interactive experiences with artists and artisans sharing their gifts and talents. In the Griot tradition participants can engage dialogue with national, international and local leaders, scholars, and experts on issues of relevance to the global Black community.

First Encounters Live Broadcasts with WVON radio
This daily feature at the African Heritage Pavilion is where African Diaspora travelers share their first encounters with Americans in Africa and with African s in America. Other issues of importance to Africa Diaspora communities will also be discussed.
Old Town School of Folk Music produces the Afrofolk Family Dance Tent
The AfroFolk Dance Pavilion offers music education and cultural performances rooted in African traditions. All activities encourage people to learn and enjoy music and culture in a friendly, spontaneous and collaborative environment where all can participate in the musical experience and share their gifts with others.
Drum with the masters; learn folk dances and the stories behind rich traditions like quilt making and basket waving. Get holistic health information from both healers and medical professionals.
The Festival is respected for its robust exhibition of fine collectible art by artists of African ancestry and is an excellent occasion to acquire affordable original art to expand your collection. Festival proceeds support Africa International House (AIH), a not-for profit organization that is dedicated to exposing and educating all people to the collective and individual contributions of African Cultures and more!

Children's Pavilion: (Sponsored by BMOA) Youth of all ages can enjoy games, music, dance, storytelling, theater, arts and crafts that include Adinkra stamps all day long! Contributors include: Betty Shabazz Charter School, Hyde Park Arts Center, Chicago Children’s Theater, and the Field Museum. Many social service agencies will be represented in the pavilion to provide answers to family, parental, and children questions.
