Final Event This Weekend
December 4, 2007 (Garland, Texas) – "Metro Muzik presents The Union," an open mic showcase at Tom Cats in Dallas, is set to end this Sunday, December 9th. The historic showcase ending is a result of Tom Cats being denied an extension on its special use permit last month. Failure of securing the extension forces the venue to close December 12th.
"The Union" showcase was established three years ago by Jaimeian "Mr. Kuwn-Dalini" Pride, the nephew of famed country music singer Charley Pride. Every Sunday, "The Union" gives local independent Hip-Hop, R&B and Spoken word artists a place to perform and hone their skills. The weekly platform was an extension of "Operation Phoenix", an showcase at Club Nairobi's on Thursdays in Deep Ellum. Also created by Mr. Dalini four years ago, the "Operation Phoenix" showcase ended in July, when Nairobi's closed down.
"The idea to start "The Union" & "Operation Phoenix" arose after my rap group and I found very few places to perform," stated Mr. Kuwn-Dalini. "That's why I created the Metro Muzik Movement to help independent artists find a new way to market themselves, to give themselves a place to perform."
What made "The Union" showcase special, was Mr. Kuwn-Dalini's the ability to blend the participation of regional and/or national acts with independent artists. While in partnership with his former alums from the promoter faction Metro Muzik: The Union, Mr. Dalini featured concerts with Capadonna & U-God, Chyna Whyte, Magno, Chalie Boy, Bavu Blakes, P.P.T., Killer Mike and Devin The Dude. Many of the top independent artists that performed at "The Union" on a regular basis were given the opportunity to open for these artists.
"As the hip-hop movement begins to shed light on the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, it's amazing to think that the next generation of superstars could possibly have preformed at one of these showcases," stated current co-host Vincent Tucker, a 2006 Cambridge Who's Who Finalist. "I appreciate Mr. Kuwn-Dalini for allowing me the opportunity to hone my hosting skills on a weekly basis and I hope the artists that crossed that stage every Sunday understood just how special it was to perform and how special it was for Mr. Kuwn-Dalini to dedicate his time and money to providing a place for them."
"In the end, I just want to be recognized for trying to open a door, providing an opportunity and giving guidance to next generations Hip-Hop, R&B and Spoken Word artists," Mr. Dalini added. "I appreciate Tom Cats partnership in this venture and I only hope that the artists that took that stage truly appreciated this event….as this weekly event was for them."
Aptly sub-titled "The Grand Finale," the last edition of "The Union," takes place this Sunday at Tom Cats. This momentous event will be hosted by Mr. Kuwn-Dalini, Vincent Tucker & Myskenna.
