This issue presents the work of the last 49 issues: an overview of The FADER's legacy to champion the unexpected and a compilation of its benchmark stories featuring artists and communities that have made a profound impact on music history. Since its launch in 1998, The FADER has been the first to give early coverage to artists such as The White Stripes and Outkast, and the first to place Kanye West, The Strokes, and MIA on its cover. Through in-depth reporting and a distinct street sensibility, with every issue The FADER is revered for featuring the best names in music before anyone else.

The commemorative issue begins with A-Z, an encyclopedia of the people, places and things that have mattered most in The FADER's first 49 issues, ranging from A for Afrobeat to Z for "Zzzzz artists we love that the world's been sleeping on." Also outlined are rare photos and essays about the people, places and movements that have defined The FADER for its first 49 issues; the stories behind "how life sounds now," including the rise of New York Rock in 2001, the empire of Atlanta Hip Hop, the great club takeover featuring Diplo, MIA and Hollertronix, and a look at the influence of Reggaeton and Soca music from the Caribbean islands. Also featured are rare photos of The FADER's favorite artists with unique signature style, followed by highlights of documentary photojournalism that has been seen in the pages of The FADER and beyond.
