Rhyme Spitters began in 2004 where 64 battle rappers came to verbally slug it out for $1,000. Today it is one of the largest annual hip-hop events in Chicago and now will play out on one of the largest stage venues in the city, the Metro on August 25th 2007. Much of immense growth in popularity of Rhyme Spitters comes from its development into a feature length documentary film by local producer Rich Seng. Since its first year of existence Rhyme Spitters has drawn over 150-200 competitors annually, and the cash prize has been raised to $3,000, but the crown of the king weighs heavy on his head for we have not yet seen a back to back champion. Home to the most well known battle rapper in the world MC Juice and Grammy Award winning Rhymefest, Chicago’s underground hip-hop community still brims over with battle rap talent. The freestyle scene is kept alive weekly at Subterranean where many emcees sharpen their skills in front of a usually packed Tuesday night crowd.
Rhyme Spitters is recognized as the only hip-hop event where all corners of the Chicago are represented and converge to remind everyone just how big, and separate, the city really is. Receiving critical acclaim as a film and with involvement from members of All Natural Inc., Molemen Inc., Gravel Records, Coalmine Music, Live Radio, Garden Music and many more, Rhyme Spitters truly is the Premiere All-City Freestyle Championship.
This year is rumored to have more regional representation with battle emcees coming in from Rockford, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and St. Louis.
The preliminary rounds and registration will begin at the Wicker Park Field House August 18th at 12:00pm. There is no fee to enter the competition.
