POLYRHYTHM ADDICTS

POLYRHYTHM ADDICTS
BREAK GLASS...
BABYGRANDE
MAY 2007

The need to "save" hip-hop has been talked about so much, it's practically a cliche. Every day, it seems another new emcee comes out and proclaims themselves the Patron Saint of rap, enlightening the masses with "the real hip-hop." The irony is that such posturing achieves a level of false grandeur, similar in kind to the bling-and-murder rap it professes to mock. But what happens when you bring together four cats with decades of experience combined in the game? In 1999, just as hip-hop was turning the corner into an era defined more by liars & loot than lyrics & truth, a hip-hop supergroup dropped a bomb on the industry. Actually, maybe supernova's a better word, as the 10 tracks quickly burned an indelible image into the consciousness of its listeners before becoming a victim, like so many others, of the business side of the game.

Now, the Polyrhythm Addicts (DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr. Complex and scorching new member Tiye Phoenix) return with the May 2007 release of Break Glass… at a time when honest hip-hop groups are so desperately needed. “Right now, hip-hop’s in an emergency,” says Sahdeeq. “Nas said, ‘Hip-hop is dead.' We think it can still be saved. You can see it. All you gotta do is just break the emergency glass and it's right there.

Break Glass… guarantees a return to the time when flow and beats actually mattered, yet sees the group maturing both artistically and emotionally from their debut. The beats are rawer, with less keyboard overdubs and more of a focus on the classic boom-bap style. In addition, the album employs a mix of beats and live musicians to beef up the sound. “Whatever’s hot now, the audience gets brainwashed into thinking that’s what’s real and there’s no balance,” says Spinna. “It’s gotten boring and I think there's an audience that's neglected. They want to hear something with more depth."

Enter the Polyrhythm Addicts. Recorded entirely at Spinna's studio, the Thingamajig Lab in Brooklyn, Break Glass… is hardly lacking in depth. Sahdeeq, recently released from prison, draws from learned experiences to bolster his already-established intelligent thug style. Mr. Complex has the natural gift of a veteran storyteller, weaving an unpredictable, hysterical string of metaphors and punchlines together. DJ Spinna, one of the most acclaimed and prolific producers in music, is legendary for his quality control and ability to drop hotness in numerous genres. And lest we think it's only about the fellas, Tiye Phoenix joins the group for that soulful, yet sexy, tip.

The name may not ring a bell, but chances are, you’ve heard something the D.C. native has done. Tiye Phoenix is that rare quadruple threat in hip-hop. As a producer, she beat out eight DJs to take the top prize at the 2006 Meet the Producers Beat Battle Invitational. As a singer, her smooth voice can be heard on a number of hip-hop albums, including Reflection Eternal's critically-acclaimed debut. As a keyboardist, (she’s been playing since she was seven) her group Soulful Symphony has rocked crowds with Nas and Black Moon, as well as Mr. Complex’s own band. But most importantly, as an emcee in the tradition of Lauryn Hill and Jean Grae, she brings that rare combination of lyrical prowess, dexterity and sick flow to add to the group’s already-powerful emcee lineup.

The former Rawkus and Universal artist recalls her initial meeting with Spinna: “The very first session we had, Spinna said to me, ‘This is a project sent to you by the heavens. It’s an opportunity for you to be as lyrical as you wanna be and just be yourself.” For Phoenix, that means bringing a sexy attitude without the trashiness of some of her female peers.

Having been in the game for over a decade, Phoenix has seen first-hand the shift in rap’s consciousness. “There are a good number of hip-hop supporters who feel like right now, hip-hop’s a vast wasteland," she says. "They know they're being short-changed and not geting the best art when they listen to the radio. We kept those people in mind because we are those people.” “I knew she was nice on the mic,” says Spinna of Phoenix. “But once we started this record and seeing how skilled she was, I knew the album was gonna be taken to another level.” While Break Glass… is the first album the foursome recorded together, the group all have connections dating back to the mid-90s. Spinna had been producing Mr. Complex’s stuff for a minute, as well as providing the beat for Sahdeeq’s underground classic “5 Star Generals” (with a then-unknown Eminem). When Complex brought the group together in 1999, he had only intended to drop one track for a Japanese compilation. That single, "Not Your Ordinary," was so popular, it spurred the hip-hop supergroup into recording their debut album Rhyme Related.

Fast forward to summer 2006 and, after label changes, personnel shifts, hardships and growth, Complex connected with Spinna to discuss reforming the group. “Over the past years, I get asked all the time, ‘W’sup with Poly? W’sup with Poly?’” Complex admits. “It’s like people never forgot and have been waiting years for the second album.”

After reconnecting with Sahdeeq and bringing in Phoenix, the group decamped to Spinna's lab to begin work on Break Glass…, which boasts contributions from Pharaohe Monch, Planet Asia, Phonte from Little Brother and many more.

“There still is a receptivity amongst the people for hip-hop to veer off in a new direction,” says Phoenix. “I think it’s what everybody is feeling like they are missing from hip-hop. Honest rhymes. Honest beats. And that pure love for the art form.”

The hammer’s already in your hand. All you gotta do is “break glass.”

Break Glass… will be released in May 2007

DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr. Complex and Tiye Phoenix are available for interviews.

DJ VADIM

ARTIST: DJ VADIM
TITLE: The Sound Catcher
LABEL: BBE
RELEASE DATE: Summer 2007

For his first full-length project since 2005's critically acclaimed supergroup release "One Self," DJ Vadim's BBE debut "The Sound Catcher" is everything you've come to expect from the DJ/producer/musical incendiary: unpredicatable, varied and ambitious.

His definitive work to date, the seventeen-track set sees the former Jazz Fudge head and longtime Ninja Tune artist throwing formality out the window and following his own path and plan. Present are straight shots of soul (‘Black Is The Night’ f/ Kathrin DeBoer), charged MC-driven wake-up calls (‘Ballistic Affairs’ f/ Skinnyman) and dense, dubby instrumentals (‘Manchester’; ‘SD4’). The dark grooves of ‘Talk To Me’ reference Gwen McCrae’s ‘90% Of Me Is You’; ‘Fear’ and ‘Watch That Sound’ delve into reggae whilst classic rap informs ‘Got To Rock’ and the sly, infectious ‘Soundcatchers’ with stalwart West Coast MC Abstract Rude.

Throw in the mystical Timbaland-esque ‘Like The Wind’ and the deep, slow burn of ‘Sufferin’ Blues’ and it adds up to a wholly fulfilling seventy minute experience. Stylistically leagues away from drab contemporary rap, The Sound Catcher is a bold and winning hybrid of 21st century hip-hop.

Artists featured on The Sound Catcher include: Emo – Jamaican Reggae Singer Syrys - Jamaican Reggae Singer Sena – Singer / Poetess Skinnyman – UK Rapper Big Red – Reggae Raggasonic Deuce Eclipse – MC from San Francisco Kathrin Deboer – Singer from Belleruche Zion – Lead Voice of Zion I - Oakland Monte Smith – Poet from N Carolina & Slam winner John Ellis – Keyboardist & songwriter from Cinematic Orchestra Abstract Rude – Founding member of Freestyle Fellowship Lil Green – Singer from Manchester (UK)

A full in-depth DJ Vadim biography and discography plus full notes on all the artists featured The Sound Catcher are available by email. DJ Vadim will be available for interviews. He will be touring throughout 2007.

DJ JAZZY JEFF

DJ JAZZY JEFF
THE RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT
BBE / RAPSTER
RELEASE DATE: SUMMERTIME

The legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff needs no introduction - he's an eternal icon for urban music worldwide. Forever innovative, DJ Jazzy Jeff is known for being one of the few DJ's who can please both mainstream and underground audiences alike. As a DJ he's one of the few masters who can truly claim to have added something unique to the art with his famous, often replicated transformer scratch. He also was the baddest DJ on the eastern seaboard way before the City of Brotherly Love produced a rapper of note and he can still rock the crowd harder than anyone.

As a producer he's produced tracks for ground-breaking artists too numerous to name - let's just say the list stretches from Eminem to Jill Scott and far beyond and note that he's sold over 10 million records worldwide! He was the first rap producer to win a Grammy, and he's now one of the most famous DJs to have made the shift from vinyl to digital without losing his art. His successful TV career (alongside former partner in crime Will Smith in 'Fresh Prince Of Bel Air') has kept him a household name for those less turntable inclined, but all this hardly matters - with DJ Jazzy Jeff it's all about the music and he truly is one of the few legendary producers whose music is still essential today.

We're pleased to now present you with a brand new DJ Jazzy Jeff album, The Return Of The Magnificent, the eagerly anticipated follow up to his well received solo debut, 2001's The Magnificent. Whilst his iconic first album was an experiment in soul-influenced Hip Hop, The Return Of The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff plows harder (albeit still soulful) ground, this time hooking up with an equally impressive array of artists such as Method Man, Rhymefest (Kanye West's prodigy), Big Daddy Kane, CL Smooth, Raheem DeVaughn, Pos of De La Soul, Kardinal, J Live, Peedi Peedi, Jean Grae and many more.

DJ Jazzy Jeff has made a Hip Hop album for today. It's not a look back to some glory day of Hip Hop but a solid concerted effort to make a record that is truly great and of it's time. This album promises to be one of 2007's highlights for anyone interested in urban music and for Jeff himself who simply states: "This is the best record I have ever done."

Scarface, The Godfather of the South, Introduces the Future of Texas With Green City

One of the most influential artists in Hip-Hop, Scarface has proved to have one of the best ears for talent in the game. Next up is Green City- the Killeen, Texas collective who plan to usher in the next wave of Southern hip hop.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 29, 2007 -- On top of being one of the most influential artists in Hip-Hop, Scarface has proved to have one of the best ears for talent in the game. Check his track record: multi-platinum and Grammy award winning Ludacris and underground hero Devin The Dude to name a couple. Next up is Green City -- the Killeen, Texas collective who plan to usher in the next wave of Southern hip hop.

Scarface has always had a lot of clout and influence in the South, staying aligned to the streets, recognizing talent and creating cutting edge music going back to the days when he was a member of The Geto Boys. Ever since those days in the early 90's, Scarface was aware of the untapped talent brewing in the South. Later he launched his solo career, breaking away from his group and eventually his influence in the South became so evident, Def Jam put their faith in him and made him head of their Southern division.

After dealing with majors, Scarface decided it was time to make his move and start his own label, giving birth to Underground Railroad. His first project was the critically acclaimed group, The Product, which was an immediate independent success. Scarface knew he was on to something and it was time to go full steam ahead with Underground Railroad.

Scarface discovered Green City while working out at his local gym in Houston, TX. Two Pro-boxers, also at the gym that day, had attended high school with the members of Green City and were working out to the group's music. Scarface approached them to find out what single they were playing. Thinking they were already signed, Scarface was ready to go out and buy their album. When he found out that they were a local group from Killeen, TX who did not have a record deal, Face was so impressed by their skills, he was ready to sign Green City on the spot.

Scarface explains his knack for finding talent nationwide, "I am the best in the business when it comes to finding raw talent. I brought Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Lil' Flip and TI to Def Jam, but they didn't bite. I end up going to Killeen TX and found Green City. They are on some different shit, something you've never heard before. I stepped out of the box for Green City cause they bring a new flavor, they just do what they do. They party 24-7, for them it's just a big ass party, but they get things done. They have the best presentation I have ever seen for a group trying to get signed, people have been sleeping on Green City. They are young and I don't want anyone I need to baby-sit, but they don't need a babysitter. The people I got on Scarface Presents - you can buy any of their albums without looking at it, it is going to be that kind of high quality every single time. I take into consideration what I am up against since the industry is shifting. I am trying to make the best stuff for the listeners and I am going to make Scarface Presents one of the biggest brands in music". Two weeks later, Green City was signed to Underground Railroad and were in Scarface's studio in Houston, TX recording their new album, Brand New Money.

Green City is comprised of 7 members - Spark Dawg, Mike Hee, Yung Texxus, MJ, J. Scott, Big Spade and G-Ni.

All the members met in Killeen High School except for G-Ni, he originally hails from Atlanta and is also the group's in house producer. Big Spade is featured on a track or two on Brand New Money, but is currently locked up on a parole violation. The name Green City comes from their hometown, Killeen. It's slang that represents both money and the city of Killeen. Green City is not only a rap group, it is also a click, and a movement in Killeen with over 50 members.

The group is still in awe of the fact that they are signed to Scarface's label. Spark Dawg expresses his amazement and gratitude, "It's surreal that we're working with him - he is our hero, and a legend in all of our eyes. No other person in Texas or even the South can give you such a big co-sign other than Face. We can't lose with him backing us up/having our back, we are blessed to be working with him." Mike Hee agrees, "Working with Face, it was kind of unbelievable, I thought I would never meet him, he is the King of the South and for him to have our back was like him giving us a G pass to anywhere, everybody respects him - he started this shit out here! He put Texas rap music on the map!"

Green City's first single off the album will be "Like A Porn Star (Party like a Rock Star)" - featuring Mannie Fresh and will be serviced nationally in the coming weeks. With their debut album, Brand New Money, set to hit stores June 19th

Highlights of this genre-bending mix include the eclectic/outrageous jazz  consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary  reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer  Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib).

On The Other Side Los Angeles DVD, Stone's Throw label supremo Peanut Butter Wolf is your personal guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds. The DVD also features an in-depth interview with Peanut Butter Wolf on 10 years of Stone's Throw as well as videos from several Stone's Throw artists.

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects.

With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive travel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive and multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally recognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a series called The Other Side - an CD/DVD experience that submerses its listeners/viewers entirely below the city's surface.

Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that acts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer alike.  While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side isn't concerned. It simply wants its user  to enjoy and discover the very best and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user's ear advice on where to go and what to see - and it does it with unprecedented style and flair.

That's why Time Out is a perfect match for Deaf Dumb & Blind's concept. According to Peter Fiennes, Editorial/Managing Director of Time Out Guides, "We're extremely happy to be working with The Other Side and Deaf Dumb & Blind on this exciting new concept. We've always been keen to expand into music, CDs  and travel on DVD, but The Other Side gives us the chance to do it all at the same time. The Other Side has  lined up some great artists and we're convinced this will be a very successful and ground-breaking project."

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Starz Entertainment celebrates Ice Cube the week of April 1 with two evenings dedicated to the actor on Starz and Starz InBlack, to coincide with the theatrical release of his new film Are We Done Yet? which hits theaters April 4.

On Monday, April 2, Starz kicks off "Stars on Starz" at 8:45 p.m. (ET/PT) with a 14-and-a-half minute exclusive "On the Set: Are We Done Yet?" featuring commentary from the cast and crew. The lineup continues with two of Ice Cube's hit films -- Are We There Yet? at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) followed by xXx: State of the Union at 10:40 p.m. (ET/PT).

On Tuesday, April 3, Ice Cube hosts "Close Up With ... But when his new home quickly becomes a costly "fixer upper" and he finds himself at the mercy of an eccentric contractor (John C. McGinley), Nick's suburban dream soon becomes a riotous nightmare.

Hip Hop Meets Wall Street: National Equities Holdings, Inc. Joins Forces with Wine Enterprises, Inc.

March 28, 2007
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bill Knollenberg, President and CEO, proudly announces that National Equities Holdings, Inc. (NEHI) (Pink Sheets:NQHD), a 22-year-old company, has aligned corporate operations with Maurice Williams, President and CEO of Wine Enterprises, Inc., also known as Nuwine aka Wine-O, a major Hip Hop Artist. Wine Enterprises now owns a major interest in NEHI. Wine Enterprises, Inc. participates as a wholly owned subsidiary in the diverse portfolio of NEHI Corporation. NEHI is a publicly traded company with major interests in oil/gas exploration, health care services and high-tech devices (blockers of harmful energy fields). The new portfolio includes Wine Enterprises, a progressive company that aggressively promotes Hip Hop, the fastest-growing segment in the entertainment industry.

Nuwine/Wine-O says this affords him the opportunity to safely expand and diversify his investments outside the music industry.

His contributions to the entertainment business complement the other portfolio companies who have outstanding officers and managers with vast business knowledge and experience.

Nuwine/Wine-O has already recorded, produced and sold over a million CDs (and this is a conservative estimate). He now has two new major albums ready to be released with three new hot singles. These five titles are expected to top the charts this year.

Nuwine/Wine-O, whose talents extend beyond personal performances, produced the top hit “Tear The Club Up,” which went platinum in just a few months, for Latoya of Destiny’s Child. His own top hits include “Hooker Hooker” in 2003 and “Pop My Trunk” in 2006. In 2006 there were over 90 million listeners to his music. Nuwine/Wine-O has been fully occupied writing and producing his new music that is expected to make a huge impact when released. His fans are anxiously awaiting these new releases.

Plans are formalized; everything is in place for distribution contracted through the largest distributor in the world, Universal Records. Avery Lipman, executive VP of Universal Records, stated, “These five new titles by Nuwine/Wine-O are destined to rapidly rise to the top of the charts.”

For those with little knowledge on the impact of Hip Hop, a recent one-hour feature by Paula Zahn on CNN acknowledged the financial successes of the artists, and her comment, confirmed by other knowledgeable persons, states, “This is the music that is going to produce the next group of billionaires.”

Terrace Martin -- In-Demand Producer Behind Snoop Dogg's "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment" -- Signs With Warner Bros. Records

BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 27, 2007 -- Warner Bros. Records is pleased to announce that it has signed a label and production deal with Terrace Martin, a Los Angeles rapper and producer who has worked with Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Talib Kweli, among others.

Under the terms of the deal, Warner Bros. Records will market, promote, and distribute artists that Martin signs to his company Jakai Music Group. Martin will also produce current Warner Bros. Records' artists (e.g. Talib Kweli's upcoming Blacksmith/WBR release), as well as put out his own music, including his debut album, which he is currently working on.

"Terrace is a throwback to a pure form of musician -- he believes in crafting real music and conceptual songs. When Craig Aaronson, Naim Ali and I banded together to sign Terrace Martin, we all knew we had the total package of artist/producer/entrepreneur," says A&R Director Tick.

Currently Martin is best known for his production work on albums by Snoop Dogg, such as Snoop's gold-certified 2006 album "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment," and other artists in Tha Dogg Pound.

Terrace, who is also a jazz saxophonist who has played with Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, describes his style as, "sounds that would happen if [hip-hop artist/producer] Hi-Tek was to have lunch with the Beatles, then go play with Michael Jackson's monkeys, then go kick it with Miles Davis. It's fun, feel-good music."

Austin joins the wide-ranging and growing stable of YMC artists, including "American Idol's" Celena Rae, All-4-One and an incredible collection of music from Willie Nelson, the Pointer Sisters, Waylon Jennings, Vanessa Williams, Natalie Cole, Al Jarreau and many others.

WDMG focuses on bringing musicians to the forefront of the entertainment industry through traditional and digital channels, but Austin is no stranger to the Dallas music scene. He has a series of successful mix tapes and has performed opening concerts for nationally recognized stars, including Outkast, DMX, Jay-Z and The Roots. Through his company, Bioniq Labs, Austin has contributed to the solo and collaborative efforts of K.N.E.S., also known as Jelly Johnson, Missy Burton, South Side Boys and many others.

His new album, “800 LB. GORILLA,” is intense and aggressive, yet soulful and provocative, containing 13 tracks with featured performances by well-known artists, including the album’s single “Bussa Move” featuring Tum Tum. “800 LB. Gorilla” will be available with both clean and explicit lyrics, and YMC Records is accepting preorders for the CD at its Web site, www.ymcrecords.com. Video of Steve Austin speaking about the making of the album will also be available on the company’s IPTV channel at www.ymctv.com.

“‘800 LB. GORILLA’ has been an exciting album for me to work on,” said Austin. “As a producer and sound engineer, this album allowed me to excel with as many different styles as possible, all in one cohesive manner. I’m pleased to have the opportunity to work with a Dallas-based record company that has the energy and enthusiasm to help me break into the national scene. YMC’s strategy and industry expertise matched with my creativity and determination makes this a great relationship in the making.”

“We could not be more pleased about the album. Steve really brought his best to create an incredible CD that showcases his talent as a writer, producer and rapper,” said Michael Fletcher, YMC Records chief operating officer. “We are already receiving strong airplay on top radio stations in a number of markets and look forward to expanding to new markets when the CD is released through our distribution partner, Universal Music Enterprises.”

Groundbreaking Artist/Producer Timbaland To Perform at 30th Anniversary McDonald's(R) All American High School Basketball Games

Mar 27, 2007
OAK BROOK, Ill., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Artist and producer Timbaland, widely acknowledged as one of music's most inventive and distinctive creators, will perform two new songs during halftime of the 30th annual McDonald's All American Boys Game, which tips off at 8:00 p.m. (EDT), March 28, 2007 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.

Timbaland's latest hit single, "Give it to Me," featuring Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, is climbing the Top 40 of the Billboard Pop 100 chart and the music video recently premiered on MTV's "TRL." The song will appear on his second solo album "Timbaland Presents Shock Value," which will be released April 3.

Timbaland's show at the McDonald's All American Games coincides with the end of his special guest stint on the first leg of Timberlake's 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow World Tour.

"In my line of work, I get to partner with the world's top artists, but I'm particularly proud to work with the McDonald's All American Games, which showcases the best basketball talent in the U.S.," said Timbaland.

Timbaland's music career spans from disc jockey to hip-hop artist and producer. His ability to work across musical genres has led to collaboration with an extensive and diverse list of standout artists including, Missy Elliott, Magoo, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Beck, The Pussycat Dolls, Fall Out Boy, Elton John and most recently, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake. A number of these artists and others will be a part of "Shock Value." The album, much like Timbaland's career, fuses genres from rap and hip-hop to pop, punk pop and garage rock to South Asian influences.

"With Timbaland's involvement in the McDonald's All American Games, it pairs the best of musical entertainment with the best of high school basketball," said Tara Hayes, McDonald's U.S. Communications.

The purpose of the McDonald's All American Games is to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities(R) (RMHC(R)). A portion of the proceeds from the 2007 Games will go to RMHC of Kentuckiana. What Does A Diamond Have To Do With A Dynasty? Former Roc-A-Fella Artist REBEL Finally Addresses The Theft of His Diamond Sign By Jay-Z

Since breaking away from Roc-a-Fella Records, REBEL has formulated his own movement, S.I.B Entertainment.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 27, 2007 -- Formerly signed to Roc-a-Fella Records as a member of the group Diamonds in da Ruff, REBEL is now an unsigned solo artist writing the next chapter in his life. Since breaking away from The Roc in 2001, REBEL has formulated his own movement (S.I.B Entertainment) and established himself as a unparalleled solo artist who is a deadly combination of talent, experience, business savvy, self-confidence and an intense drive that is fueled by his deep love for the music.

REBEL’s music isn’t image driven but rather a mirror of his life, so the result is material that is riddled with complexity and unpredictability. He freely gives an honest look into his real person and takes you on a easily visualized journey that chronicles his life’s ups and downs, allowing people on all levels to see a bit of themselves in his words.

REBEL knows he comes from a unique position in rap. He has the experience of a seasoned artist without any stigma of failure. His start in the game wasn’t unsuccessful, he simply never released an album, and his fans have never stopped checking for him. Grateful for that fact, REBEL has spent the last 3 years giving his loyal fans, as well as his new fan base, exactly what they want. Hot music that is coupled with a level of integrity that the game is sorely missing.

Never one for theatrics, REBEL has always wanted people to know him for his music and respect him for his ideas and honest personality; not for some fabricated beef or purchased DJ cosign or manufactured image. It was that desire to stand on his music alone that has keep REBEL silent on the true lineage of the diamond sign for all these years. He didn’t want his speaking up to look like some kind of tactic. And he didn’t want his music to be overshadowed by controversy.

Having said that, many will ask why speak up now? Given the recent attacks on Jay-Z is it opportunity? Strategic timing? A cry for attention?

Truth is, it’s a collection of things. Most notably:

-   REBEL’s longstanding anger at Jay for stealing his sign and running with it without so much a sign of gratitude or acknowledgment. An anger that has only intensified over the years as his diamond sign has taken on a life of its own.

-   The realization that staying silent wasn’t being true to his person. He has always been honest, almost to a fault. Keeping quiet just to avoid ruffling feathers or slightly shifting the attention from his music to himself doesn’t jive with who he is. He realized he’s been voicing his frustration at the game’s reluctance to take a risk and stop being so safe and that was exactly what he was doing.

“When I first saw Jay throwing up the diamond sign on the cover of his Dynasty album I can’t lie, I was angry,” said REBEL. “But I had temporarily given up rap so I let it rock. I guess at the time I also never imagined he’d push it so hard. When I got back in the game and had gotten all the way comfortable being a solo artist I had written a dis record and was ready to go at Jay hard but I stopped myself. I didn’t want my music to have to compete with the controversy. But in the past year or two since then, I‘ve come to some important realizations. For starters, my music is strong enough to hold its own against a little controversy or anything else you throw at it. Secondly, I’ve never let anyone or anything stop me from being who I am or saying or doing what I want no matter what the consequences. By my own standards I was being a clown for holding my tongue on something that I felt so strongly about.”

“You can clearly see me throwing up the diamond sign in The Streets is Watching movie in 1998. Jay didn’t begin throwing up the diamond sign until The Dynasty Album in 2000 after we (Diamonds in da Ruff) had left the label and broken up. I mean ask urself. What’s a diamond got to do with a dynasty? The diamond represents Diamonds in da Ruff - - that’s my group.”

REBEL isn’t looking to ride some anti Jay-Z wave to the top. He truly hopes that people can just appreciate the long overdue history lesson and move forward to continue to give his music the long hard listen it deserves because at the end of the day he wants to be known for his ability to make classic music.

By coming forward he has secured his due recognition for his past contributions to the game. Now he wants to set the stage for his future contributions.

“Throw ur Diamonds up” is a hard hitting freestyle that is saturated with indisputable evidence. The freestyle is intended not as a dis record but as a history lesson. It isn’t an attack on Jay-Z. It’s a charismatic outline of the facts and an introduction to the artist of the future.
