POLYRHYTHM ADDICTS

POLYRHYTHM ADDICTS
BREAK GLASS…
BABYGRANDE
MAY 2007

The need to "save" hip-hop has been talked about so much, it’s practically a cliche. Every day, it seems another new emcee comes out and proclaims themselves the Patron Saint of rap, enlightening the masses with "the real hip-hop." The irony is that such posturing achieves a level of false grandeur, similar in kind to the bling-and-murder rap it professes to mock. But what happens when you bring together four cats with decades of experience combined in the game? In 1999, just as hip-hop was turning the corner into an era defined more by liars & loot than lyrics & truth, a hip-hop supergroup dropped a bomb on the industry. Actually, maybe supernova’s a better word, as the 10 tracks quickly burned an indelible image into the consciousness of its listeners before becoming a victim, like so many others, of the business side of the game.

Now, the Polyrhythm Addicts (DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr. Complex and scorching new member Tiye Phoenix) return with the May 2007 release of Break Glass… at a time when honest hip-hop groups are so desperately needed. “Right now, hip-hop’s in an emergency,” says Sahdeeq. “Nas said, ‘Hip-hop is dead.’ We think it can still be saved. You can see it. All you gotta do is just break the emergency glass and it’s right there.

Break Glass… guarantees a return to the time when flow and beats actually mattered, yet sees the group maturing both artistically and emotionally from their debut. The beats are rawer, with less keyboard overdubs and more of a focus on the classic boom-bap style. In addition, the album employs a mix of beats and live musicians to beef up the sound. “Whatever’s hot now, the audience gets brainwashed into thinking that’s what’s real and there’s no balance,” says Spinna. “It’s gotten boring and I think there’s an audience that’s neglected. They want to hear something with more depth."

Enter the Polyrhythm Addicts. Recorded entirely at Spinna’s studio, the Thingamajig Lab in Brooklyn, Break Glass… is hardly lacking in depth. Sahdeeq, recently released from prison, draws from learned experiences to bolster his already-established intelligent thug style. Mr. Complex has the natural gift of a veteran storyteller, weaving an unpredictable, hysterical string of metaphors and punchlines together. DJ Spinna, one of the most acclaimed and prolific producers in music, is legendary for his quality control and ability to drop hotness in numerous genres. And lest we think it’s only about the fellas, Tiye Phoenix joins the group for that soulful, yet sexy, tip.

The name may not ring a bell, but chances are, you’ve heard something the D.C. native has done. Tiye Phoenix is that rare quadruple threat in hip-hop. As a producer, she beat out eight DJs to take the top prize at the 2006 Meet the Producers Beat Battle Invitational. As a singer, her smooth voice can be heard on a number of hip-hop albums, including Reflection Eternal’s critically-acclaimed debut. As a keyboardist, (she’s been playing since she was seven) her group Soulful Symphony has rocked crowds with Nas and Black Moon, as well as Mr. Complex’s own band. But most importantly, as an emcee in the tradition of Lauryn Hill and Jean Grae, she brings that rare combination of lyrical prowess, dexterity and sick flow to add to the group’s already-powerful emcee lineup.

The former Rawkus and Universal artist recalls her initial meeting with Spinna: “The very first session we had, Spinna said to me, ‘This is a project sent to you by the heavens. It’s an opportunity for you to be as lyrical as you wanna be and just be yourself.” For Phoenix, that means bringing a sexy attitude without the trashiness of some of her female peers.

Having been in the game for over a decade, Phoenix has seen first-hand the shift in rap’s consciousness. “There are a good number of hip-hop supporters who feel like right now, hip-hop’s a vast wasteland," she says. "They know they’re being short-changed and not geting the best art when they listen to the radio. We kept those people in mind because we are those people.” “I knew she was nice on the mic,” says Spinna of Phoenix. “But once we started this record and seeing how skilled she was, I knew the album was gonna be taken to another level.” While Break Glass… is the first album the foursome recorded together, the group all have connections dating back to the mid-90s. Spinna had been producing Mr. Complex’s stuff for a minute, as well as providing the beat for Sahdeeq’s underground classic “5 Star Generals” (with a then-unknown Eminem). When Complex brought the group together in 1999, he had only intended to drop one track for a Japanese compilation. That single, "Not Your Ordinary," was so popular, it spurred the hip-hop supergroup into recording their debut album Rhyme Related.

Fast forward to summer 2006 and, after label changes, personnel shifts, hardships and growth, Complex connected with Spinna to discuss reforming the group. “Over the past years, I get asked all the time, ‘W’sup with Poly? W’sup with Poly?’” Complex admits. “It’s like people never forgot and have been waiting years for the second album.”

After reconnecting with Sahdeeq and bringing in Phoenix, the group decamped to Spinna’s lab to begin work on Break Glass…, which boasts contributions from Pharaohe Monch, Planet Asia, Phonte from Little Brother and many more.

“There still is a receptivity amongst the people for hip-hop to veer off in a new direction,” says Phoenix. “I think it’s what everybody is feeling like they are missing from hip-hop. Honest rhymes. Honest beats. And that pure love for the art form.”

The hammer’s already in your hand. All you gotta do is “break glass.”

Break Glass… will be released in May 2007

DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr. Complex and Tiye Phoenix are available for interviews.

DJ VADIM

ARTIST: DJ VADIM
TITLE: The Sound Catcher
LABEL: BBE
RELEASE DATE: Summer 2007

For his first full-length project since 2005′s critically acclaimed supergroup release "One Self," DJ Vadim’s BBE debut "The Sound Catcher" is everything you’ve come to expect from the DJ/producer/musical incendiary: unpredicatable, varied and ambitious.

His definitive work to date, the seventeen-track set sees the former Jazz Fudge head and longtime Ninja Tune artist throwing formality out the window and following his own path and plan. Present are straight shots of soul (‘Black Is The Night’ f/ Kathrin DeBoer), charged MC-driven wake-up calls (‘Ballistic Affairs’ f/ Skinnyman) and dense, dubby instrumentals (‘Manchester’; ‘SD4’). The dark grooves of ‘Talk To Me’ reference Gwen McCrae’s ‘90% Of Me Is You’; ‘Fear’ and ‘Watch That Sound’ delve into reggae whilst classic rap informs ‘Got To Rock’ and the sly, infectious ‘Soundcatchers’ with stalwart West Coast MC Abstract Rude.

Throw in the mystical Timbaland-esque ‘Like The Wind’ and the deep, slow burn of ‘Sufferin’ Blues’ and it adds up to a wholly fulfilling seventy minute experience. Stylistically leagues away from drab contemporary rap, The Sound Catcher is a bold and winning hybrid of 21st century hip-hop.

Artists featured on The Sound Catcher include: Emo – Jamaican Reggae Singer Syrys – Jamaican Reggae Singer Sena – Singer / Poetess Skinnyman – UK Rapper Big Red – Reggae Raggasonic Deuce Eclipse – MC from San Francisco Kathrin Deboer – Singer from Belleruche Zion – Lead Voice of Zion I – Oakland Monte Smith – Poet from N Carolina & Slam winner John Ellis – Keyboardist & songwriter from Cinematic Orchestra Abstract Rude – Founding member of Freestyle Fellowship Lil Green – Singer from Manchester (UK)

A full in-depth DJ Vadim biography and discography plus full notes on all the artists featured The Sound Catcher are available by email. DJ Vadim will be available for interviews. He will be touring throughout 2007.

DJ JAZZY JEFF

DJ JAZZY JEFF
THE RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT
BBE / RAPSTER
RELEASE DATE: SUMMERTIME

The legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff needs no introduction – he’s an eternal icon for urban music worldwide. Forever innovative, DJ Jazzy Jeff is known for being one of the few DJ’s who can please both mainstream and underground audiences alike. As a DJ he’s one of the few masters who can truly claim to have added something unique to the art with his famous, often replicated transformer scratch. He also was the baddest DJ on the eastern seaboard way before the City of Brotherly Love produced a rapper of note and he can still rock the crowd harder than anyone.

As a producer he’s produced tracks for ground-breaking artists too numerous to name – let’s just say the list stretches from Eminem to Jill Scott and far beyond and note that he’s sold over 10 million records worldwide! He was the first rap producer to win a Grammy, and he’s now one of the most famous DJs to have made the shift from vinyl to digital without losing his art. His successful TV career (alongside former partner in crime Will Smith in ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel Air’) has kept him a household name for those less turntable inclined, but all this hardly matters – with DJ Jazzy Jeff it’s all about the music and he truly is one of the few legendary producers whose music is still essential today.

We’re pleased to now present you with a brand new DJ Jazzy Jeff album, The Return Of The Magnificent, the eagerly anticipated follow up to his well received solo debut, 2001′s The Magnificent. Whilst his iconic first album was an experiment in soul-influenced Hip Hop, The Return Of The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff plows harder (albeit still soulful) ground, this time hooking up with an equally impressive array of artists such as Method Man, Rhymefest (Kanye West’s prodigy), Big Daddy Kane, CL Smooth, Raheem DeVaughn, Pos of De La Soul, Kardinal, J Live, Peedi Peedi, Jean Grae and many more.

DJ Jazzy Jeff has made a Hip Hop album for today. It’s not a look back to some glory day of Hip Hop but a solid concerted effort to make a record that is truly great and of it’s time. This album promises to be one of 2007′s highlights for anyone interested in urban music and for Jeff himself who simply states: "This is the best record I have ever done."

Scarface, The Godfather of the South, Introduces the Future of Texas With Green City

One of the most influential artists in Hip-Hop, Scarface has proved to have one of the best ears for talent in the game. Next up is Green City- the Killeen, Texas collective who plan to usher in the next wave of Southern hip hop.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 29, 2007 — On top of being one of the most influential artists in Hip-Hop, Scarface has proved to have one of the best ears for talent in the game. Check his track record: multi-platinum and Grammy award winning Ludacris and underground hero Devin The Dude to name a couple. Next up is Green City — the Killeen, Texas collective who plan to usher in the next wave of Southern hip hop.

Scarface has always had a lot of clout and influence in the South, staying aligned to the streets, recognizing talent and creating cutting edge music going back to the days when he was a member of The Geto Boys. Ever since those days in the early 90′s, Scarface was aware of the untapped talent brewing in the South. Later he launched his solo career, breaking away from his group and eventually his influence in the South became so evident, Def Jam put their faith in him and made him head of their Southern division.

After dealing with majors, Scarface decided it was time to make his move and start his own label, giving birth to Underground Railroad. His first project was the critically acclaimed group, The Product, which was an immediate independent success. Scarface knew he was on to something and it was time to go full steam ahead with Underground Railroad.

Scarface discovered Green City while working out at his local gym in Houston, TX. Two Pro-boxers, also at the gym that day, had attended high school with the members of Green City and were working out to the group’s music. Scarface approached them to find out what single they were playing. Thinking they were already signed, Scarface was ready to go out and buy their album. When he found out that they were a local group from Killeen, TX who did not have a record deal, Face was so impressed by their skills, he was ready to sign Green City on the spot.

Scarface explains his knack for finding talent nationwide, "I am the best in the business when it comes to finding raw talent. I brought Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Lil’ Flip and TI to Def Jam, but they didn’t bite. I end up going to Killeen TX and found Green City. They are on some different shit, something you’ve never heard before. I stepped out of the box for Green City cause they bring a new flavor, they just do what they do. They party 24-7, for them it’s just a big ass party, but they get things done. They have the best presentation I have ever seen for a group trying to get signed, people have been sleeping on Green City. They are young and I don’t want anyone I need to baby-sit, but they don’t need a babysitter. The people I got on Scarface Presents – you can buy any of their albums without looking at it, it is going to be that kind of high quality every single time. I take into consideration what I am up against since the industry is shifting. I am trying to make the best stuff for the listeners and I am going to make Scarface Presents one of the biggest brands in music". Two weeks later, Green City was signed to Underground Railroad and were in Scarface’s studio in Houston, TX recording their new album, Brand New Money.

Green City is comprised of 7 members – Spark Dawg, Mike Hee, Yung Texxus, MJ, J. Scott, Big Spade and G-Ni.

All the members met in Killeen High School except for G-Ni, he originally hails from Atlanta and is also the group’s in house producer. Big Spade is featured on a track or two on Brand New Money, but is currently locked up on a parole violation. The name Green City comes from their hometown, Killeen. It’s slang that represents both money and the city of Killeen. Green City is not only a rap group, it is also a click, and a movement in Killeen with over 50 members.

The group is still in awe of the fact that they are signed to Scarface’s label. Spark Dawg expresses his amazement and gratitude, "It’s surreal that we’re working with him – he is our hero, and a legend in all of our eyes. No other person in Texas or even the South can give you such a big co-sign other than Face. We can’t lose with him backing us up/having our back, we are blessed to be working with him." Mike Hee agrees, "Working with Face, it was kind of unbelievable, I thought I would never meet him, he is the King of the South and for him to have our back was like him giving us a G pass to anywhere, everybody respects him – he started this shit out here! He put Texas rap music on the map!"

Green City’s first single off the album will be "Like A Porn Star (Party like a Rock Star)" – featuring Mannie Fresh and will be serviced nationally in the coming weeks. With their debut album, Brand New Money, set to hit stores June 19th
