LOS ANGELES, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- UrbanWorld Wireless announces today its transition from the wireless world into the digital arena. Additionally, the company unveils its "Fab Five" Advisory Board team that will work hand in hand with the company in executing the new shift in strategy. The newly appointed advisory board is comprised of:
* Mark Levy, CEO and founder, Maxxomedia, a digital media consultancy and
licensing agency -- over 20 years experience in the media,
entertainment and technology industries.
* Keith Clinkscales, senior publisher of ESPN Magazine -- oversees all
operations of the award winning magazine both domestically and
internationally. Has successfully headed multiple magazines titles.
* LaSean Smith, senior product manager, Motorola -- known as a digital
music pioneer, credited with helping design and develop one of the
first successful digital media distribution platforms.
* Daymond John, CEO and founder, FUBU -- built the multimillion dollar
international apparel brand from the ground up. His honors include "50
Most Influential Men" and "Top Forty Under Forty" and others.
* Jon Bukosky, Managing Partner, BFD/ventures -- over 18 years experience
in the mobile/digital media market and has served as a former senior
executive of 4 mobile entertainment companies.
This who's who list of entertainment and technology executives are working together interactively and collaboratively with the company employing its new strategy. Urbanworld, which has sometimes been thought of as a single faceted 'ringtone company' is now moving full steam ahead to become a multifaceted digital entertainment powerhouse. "UWW has demonstrated what it takes to be successful in the mobile industry. In addition, they have the in-house expertise to quickly and effectively execute strategies together with the advisory board," says LaSean Smith of Motorola. Advisory Board Member Mike Levy adds, "UrbanWorld consistently looks ahead into emerging entertainment markets to deliver ground-breaking content and services. It's a pleasure to work with CEO Mike Johns and his team to bring UWW into the next phase."
In the spirit of transitioning the company from wireless to digital, UrbanWorld has forged several strategic alliances to ensure the company is indeed ready to execute its plan. The company is further expanding its reach from ringtones, streaming video and data services, to add full length track downloads from indie artists through its new digital music label, UrbanWorld Music (UWM). Through UWM, the company will offer video streaming, broadband and podcasting this year. The label kicks off with three of the most notable indie rap artists in the game. Bay area rapper Keak Da Sneak, who is featured on E-40's "Tell 'em When To Go", and also in the January issue of XXL magazine, will be along side the "Best Midwest Rapper" Bump J and the "Best Underground Rap Star", Remo Da RapStar, as named at the 2006 Justo Mixtapes Awards.
The company has also entered into multiple agreements to provide the popular UrbanWorld News service on a subscription basis. The subscription news services includes "Hi-Tech Pimpin'" -- a weekly news brief on technology, wireless and consumer trends, prepared for the urban market; the acclaimed mobile news series "Reality Check" -- a weekly discussion of socially conscious issues affecting the urban community, which requests and reports feedback from subscribers; and thirdly the "DJ Clue Report" -- a weekly report of the top 5 songs, mixtapes and ringtones. DJ Clue will also serve as A&R scout for newly created UrbanWorld Music.
"Through UrbanWorld News, UWW has done an exceptional job of keeping all the players in the urban game informed, entertained and sometimes ... educated. It's digital platform links the entire 'urban world'," says Keith Clinkscales of ESPN Magazine. "If hip-hop were to die before it wakes, chances are UWW will blow you up on your mobile phone, computer, PDA, or smartphone," he adds.
Lastly, as part of the digital revolution, the company recently expanded its mobile distribution network. Now mobile content is available to more than 200 million mobile phone subscribers in the US alone. In addition, the company has new international distribution deals in place to distribute content in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, South Africa and Canada.
